RECENT ADVANCES IN BONE AND SOFT TISSUE, HEAD&NECK and GENITOURINARY PATHOLOGY
Dr. Cornejo is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Division Director of Dermatopathology at Indiana University Health. She is a board-certified pathologist with subspecialty expertise in genitourinary pathology and dermatopathology. Dr. Cornejo completed her pathology residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, followed by fellowship training in genitourinary pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital and dermatopathology at the University of Massachusetts. Her clinical and research interests focus on renal, testicular and penile pathology, particularly testicular sex cord–stromal tumors, and the classification and molecular characterization of penile neoplasia. She is a member of the Testicular Sex Cord–Stromal Tumor (TESST) Group, an international expert panel supported by the Genitourinary Pathology Society and the International Society of Urologic Pathology and has contributed extensively to multi-institutional studies that have shaped current diagnostic and classification practices in testicular pathology. This conference marks Dr. Cornejo’s first visit to Romania, and she is honored to join the participants and organizers of the course.
Prof. Baumhoer is a consultant surgical pathologist and deputy chair of the Institute of Pathology at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen, Health Ostschweiz in Switzerland. He graduated from medical school in Göttingen, Germany, in 2003, did his residency in Basel, Switzerland, and passed the final board exam in pathology in 2009. After a research fellowship in Munich, Germany, he returned to the University Hospital in Basel and focused his diagnostic and scientific interest on bone tumor and head and neck pathology. In 2014 he became the head of the Bone Tumor Reference Center (BTRC) and the registry of DOESAK (German-Austrian-Swiss Working Group on craniofacial tumors) and provided consultation service for around 800 cases per year, mainly from Switzerland and Germany. In 2026, Prof. Baumhoer moved to St. Gallen and continues to provide a second opinion pathology service. Prof. Baumhoer is an adjunct professor at the University of Basel and also a visiting professor of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
As a main research focus, Prof. Baumhoer is investigating the molecular pathogenesis of bone tumors and the role of methylome profiling in the classification of soft tissue and bone tumors. He published several research papers in acclaimed scientific journals on the genetic findings underlying osteosarcoma and non-ossifying fibroma. Furthermore, he is one of the editors of the upcoming WHO classification of soft tissue and bone tumours, contributed >30 chapters for 6 WHO tumour classifications and published >250 peer-reviewed research papers.
Dr. G. Petur Nielsen was born in Iceland and earned his medical degree from the University of Iceland. He completed his residency training in anatomic pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital followed by a fellowship training in surgical pathology and bone and soft tissue pathology at the same institution. He is currently a Pathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. He is the director of bone and soft tissue pathology and electron microscopy at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has published over 300 articles and case reports, several book chapters and is the co-author of textbooks on bone and soft tissue pathology including the upcoming Enzinger and Weiss’s soft tissue tumors. He has given short courses at the USCAP, lectured throughout the US and the world. He has received teaching awards and was recently awarded a Doctoris Honoris Causa at the Universitatea de Medicina si Famacie, Victor Babes in Romania for his contribution and teaching in Timisoara, Romania. His research, teaching and clinical activities focuses on bone and soft tissue pathology.
